Some of you have read the story of Corky, the rescue Corgi, which I co-own with my mother. Recently, Corky and my Mother (who is in poor health), came to live with me, my husband, and my irrasible, 10-year Welsh Corgi, Tripper. This was fairly okay with both dogs, as these two old bachelors corgi's were well acquainted. Until two years ago, I had a Calico Cat - LaVinia, who was truly beautiful and tiny, but who passed away at age 15. So, I have been looking for a new LaVinia, and of course - only a Calico will do. To satisfy this need, my single friend Annette and I, went to Adopt-A-Pet near my home. You should know that Annette has no pets! Now, to me being without pets is a very strange state of being, and I constantly keep after her to get a pet. So, in I go -- and there are no calico cats! There is, however, this darling little (under 10 lb.) black dog named "Lady". Immediately, and before Annette is quite in the room, I have "Lady" out of the cage, and to ready her to butter up this "potential" pet fancier. To make a long story short - Annette is a hard sell - I am not. It comes under the "no way Jose theory," that this little love was going back into a cage, and not going immediately home!) So, I now have added this darling, perfectly behaved, and loving, PEKINESE to my Welsh Corgi household! Her name (to which she readily agreed) was changed to "Ermine" in honor of her tiny forepaws, which are white with black spots. What you ask, did the old bachelors corgis, Corky and Tripper, say to this perky little gal in their midst? (& we all know that corgis think & talk) They exchanged looks when she came in, because I know they were wondering, "Is THIS a CORGI?" (We don't think so...) Then, Tripper decided as it was not a Corgi, then he had to fight her! SURPRISE - when this "8 pound stick of dynamite" -- turned the tables right back on him! Grrrr!!! Up on her front paws leaning on his shoulders & fighting back..... Definitely something new to this "Corgi Lord of His Manor"! Tripper paused - "What a Woman, I am IN LOVE!". (This incidently is fine, because EVERYONE is neutered: please don't ask for a Peke-A-Corgi pup.) Corky, when he realized that Ermine thinks he is wonderful, and wants to lick his face constantly, and lay beside him, decided this new addition might just work out. Now, my husband was out of town on a fishing trip when this occurred. He tries, but is just not the dog lover that I am. So, when he returned with the bad news that the fish weren't biting - I told him that was okay. I, on the other hand, had taken the bait at the adopt a pet, and we had caught another dog! Every evening, the couch is a crowded, but happy place as we all watch the news. Another happy dog rescue story... Story by: Lyn Falk
